BC Baseball College Prep Champs (Chilliwack Cougars) Win Diamond Nation 18u College Elite Showcase Wood Bat Tournament in New Jersey
Team BC – Day 4 – Playoffs
August 24, 2017
What a day! Word is out by now that Team BC is this year’s Diamond Nation College Showcase 18U Wood Bat Tournament champions, but here are more details. The day began with the semi-final game against Eagleville Phillies (team name was incorrect yesterday). This team must have thought it would be an easy win as they started trickling into the dugout only about 15 minutes before the game. However, when Team BC got 6 runs in the first inning, it became apparent to the Phillies that Team BC was here to compete. Harbut pitched a complete game and it only took 5 innings to sit the Eagleville Phillies down. Gernon was 3 for 3 with a homerun, triple and double. Another triple also by King, which brought the 13th run in to end the game in a mercy of 13 3. Schulz was 2 for 2 with a walk, both singles. Pankratz played it smart and was 3 for 3 on base with walks. Carpenter was also 3 for 3 on base with a beauty bunt, a single and a walk. Singles also by Dykstra, Hall, Merritt and Ray. The Phillies didn’t know what hit them! Congrats Team BC for making it to the final game!
Final game was against MVP Blue Jackets, a very strong team that was 4 and 0 in pool play. Iversen started the game, and had 7 strikeouts. Great double play ending the 5th inning, Hall (2B) to Ray (SS) to Pankratz (1B). When Iversen was at his pitching limit, Carpenter came in during the 6th to close. Carpenter came in at a tie game 3-3. But that didn’t shake us—we are a team that battles to the end. King was first up in the 7th inning and was HBP. Dangerous runner now stands on 1st! Big mistake! This guy has wheels. . . .Gernon singles, Pankratz comes up with a hard line drive to left that allows King to speed all the way home! Score is now 4-3!
But the Blue Jackets have their last bats. First batter – strike out! Second batter – ground ball 5-3 and 3rd batter – the game ends with a perfectly played ground ball to Pankratz who softly tosses it to Carpenter. 1st base is tagged and the bench clears with cheers, water, jumping and high fives! Offensive mentions: Gernon goes 4 for 4 with 1B, 3B, 2B and 1B. Hall goes 2 for 3 with 2 singles. Singles by Pankratz, Carpenter and Merritt. Merritt also had a beauty sacrifice fly for the first RBI.
Whew, what a day of baseball! Every player on this strong roster played a vital role throughout this season and in this tournament to bring the team to victory in the last game of the year. This was King, Pankratz, Carpenter, Iversen, and Pecht’s last game as high school students! And what a game it was! Our coaches were complimented on our Team BC and these teams in New Jersey now realize a Canadian team from BC means business and are formidable opponents.
On a final note, Carter Harbut and Daniel Gernon were named the tournaments Co MVP’s. Outstanding accomplishment!
Way to go guys!
We have ended the day with a delicious team dinner at an authentic Italian restaurant and they are having fun in the pool.
Friday will be our final full day and we plan to head back to New York for some final shopping and sightseeing, ending at the Yankees game tomorrow evening.
I will sign off and say it has been my pleasure to represent BC Baseball as Chef for this amazing Team BC. These are wonderful young men and all you parents can be very proud of each of his accomplishments. Good luck to each one as they continue in this great sport of baseball.
