Cuban Ball Team Visits Chemainus!
Our journey began a few years ago when Chemainus and District Baseball Association sent down used baseball equipment to Cuba with Rob and Tracy Dyke. The gratitude from the Matanzas’s Baseball Association came with an invite for Chemainus and District Baseball to bring a team to Cuba to play ball. And so the fundraising began and this became a reality with the huge support from our local community. We left Chemainus in August of 2016, with 13 Level A (ages 16-20) ball players whose lives were touched in ways that go beyond words. Although we went with 10 large equipment bags full of humanitarian from our communities, our players were giving away their own personal gear. Our players were in sock feet on the field, truly heartwarming moments. The gratitude from the Cuban players did not end there, they walked 4 and half hours to our resort the day before we left to say thank you.
We made history there as well, as we were the first national team to play on the ball field in Union De Reyes. We played a game on the oldest field in the world, on Fidel Castro’s 90th birthday and were the 138th Canadian team to play there. So the next part of this journey is unfolding as we presented the team with a letter of invitation to come to Chemainus, BC, Canada. The Cuban Government granted the permission without any financial assistance. This is historical for a noncompetitive team to be given this permission. So this journey has taken us on another fundraising initiative to raise the funds to bring the Cuban Ball Team and crew here to the Cowichan Valley.
They will arrive on July 14th , 2017 in Victoria at 9:30 pm, so the next chapter begins in our story on our journey with the Cuban Ball Team ……. COME ON OUT AND ENJOY SOME GREAT BALL GAMES, MEET THE CUBAN BALL TEAM AND OUR CONCESSION WILL BE OPEN FOR GREAT FOOD
