BASEBALL GROWING ON NORTH VANCOUVER ISLAND
Minor ball on the North Island was nonexistent up till about 4 years ago. Through hard work from parents in the Tri-Port area, it slowly started to gain traction.
For the past 3 years, TriPort Minor Baseball has been able to schedule exhibition games down Island, starting with 2 games 3 years ago in Campbell River. Last year the Tadpole Division entered a tournament in Comox and the Peewee Division played 6 games which included having teams from Comox come up Island for games during the community’s local slo-pitch tournament.
In 2017 Tri-Port Minor Baseball now has grown to 67 kids in all 5 divisions including the first year for a Bantam division.
Ryan Handley coaches the Pee Wee U13 team and has recently traveled to Chemainus for a tournament. Out of 10 teams, they finished 2nd and also won the most Sportsmanlike team award. The TriPort Bantams are traveling to Duncan this coming weekend for a tournament, along with the Mosquito and Tadpole divisions.
The Association enjoys significant local support as far as sponsorship goes and it had to basically start from scratch with all of the necessary equipment needed in all divisions. The Association competes heavily with soccer so it has been a challenge but more and more kids seem to be making the transition from soccer to baseball.
As TriPort Minor Baseball moves forward there is hope to build the association through better promoting and advertising and the goal is to get to 75 or 80 kids in the next couple years. Carla Wagnor was a huge part of Minor Baseball rejuvenation on the North Island but work took her away from the community and if not for her hard work a couple years ago the program may not have got off the ground. Nicole Handley has been a key cog in the wheel the past 2 years growing the association, and with help from Ryan and a dedicated parent group there is every reason to look forward to continued growth in the years ahead.
With programs such as the Coaches Caravan, “Athletics for Kids” (A4K), and the Island Coaching Conference to name a few initiatives, BC Baseball will support TriPort Minor Baseball as it continues its journey in growth and development of grass roots baseball.
